Hello and welcome. This page is for volunteers who have heard about the programme to teach English at a distance to Afghan women in Afghanistan.
The main aim is for Afghan women without current support in English to send short pieces of work for feedback from native English speakers.
You don't need to
commit a lot of time
already be an English teacher
have previous experience of IELTS (see FAQ)
teach online
You just need a confident grasp of written and / or spoken English and a computer.
How does it work?
Currently, I am in touch with my students via Whatsapp, this website and shared files. The plan however is for volunteers to pick up written work or audio files from the student from a shared file drop, avoiding the need to share contact details.
Why do Afghan women want to learn English?
Teaching English within Afghanistan is one way to work from home. If or when women are able to travel abroad for work or study, English, as a lingua franca, is very useful or essential. Knowing English also enables contact with other cultures via the internet, at a time that politically, economically and socially is difficult for women in Afghanistan.
Cultural notes
Most of the women use mobile phones to do their work. In Afghan culture teachers are respected and appreciated. Many women shoulder the caring responsibilities for family members. Some women may be in precarious financial circumstances. Work, education, travel are all challenging for women in Afghanistan. Some rarely leave the house, as it avoids problems. The most realistic option for women to work at present is from home. Many women though have the same ambitions as other people around the world: to study, to work, to travel.
Finally...
Please be aware this programme is new, so we are finding our way and adapting it as we discover better methods.
If you are able to give a small amount of time to correct a short piece of written or spoken work or if you have any questions please contact me.
