The bar chart compares the percentages of people giving to charity during two specific years, 1990 and 2010. It also shows a breakdown by age.
The results show that, in both years generosity rose and peaked in mid-life before tailing away. People were more generous overall in 1990, especially in the first half of life. However, in 2010, older groups were slightly more generous than younger groups.
Generosity peaked in 1990 at just over 40% of people donating in the 36-50 age bracket. Thereafter it dwindled to just over 30% among the over 65s but was still about double the donations of those in the 18-25 bracket.
Donations were higher in 1990 among younger groups. There was a noticeable gap, about 10% in generosity, particularly in the youngest people between 1990 and 2010 with higher donations in the former year. This gap closed in subsequent age groups. By 2010, however, it was the older cohort who were giving more than they had in 1990, though only by about 4% among those aged 51-65. Giving diminished slightly among the over 65s in both years, compared to the next youngest group, but was still greater in 2010 than in 1990.
